Why Reverse Osmosis Water Systems Do Not Remove Contaminants
Reverse osmosis water systems provide a number of advantages. Some of these are: RO is considerably more cost-efficient than other public water purifying systems, especially if the molecular weight of your desired solids exceeds 200. RO is also energy efficient and doesn’t have the boiling problems that occur with distillation because of their high operating temperatures. And, RO systems do not contribute to acid rain.
Unfortunately, there are some disadvantages to reverse osmosis water systems. First, RO works by forcing pressurized water through a fine membrane that filters contaminants from the water. Because the pores are very fine, some of the most common water contaminants are missed, including chemical contaminants, lead, chlorine, cysts, VOCs, prescription drugs and microscopic parasites.
Next, RO requires the use of pressurized air. This can increase your heating costs. In addition, if your system uses a heat exchange device, you will need a special system to heat your drinking supply. And, the membrane filter is not always reliable, allowing some waste water to slip through. This leads to mineral contamination. Tankless design solves many of these problems.
Tankless water systems that utilize a carbon-based filter such as carbon block or reverse osmosis filters are considered the best way to protect your family’s health. These units do not waste water. They use a combination of water filtration and sub micron filtration to remove sediment and contaminants. If you are serviced by a treatment facility, you should have your drinking supply tested before installing one of these systems. By doing so, you will be able to see if you are receiving the highest quality.
Tankless systems do not waste water. Only a portion of it is wasted. The other portion is recycled back into the supply. This means that, because a carbon filter reduces impurities, the volume of treated water is typically higher than without one. A reverse osmosis filter reduces wastes by breaking up water molecules as it passes through the membrane.
A uv filter needs to be activated to work effectively. Activated UV filters use a combination of ultraviolet light and ionization to destroy living organisms in the water. Depending on the kind of system you purchase, there may also be an activated carbon filter. This combination kills microorganisms, which is good for reducing the chlorination byproduct THMs that is released into the environment.
Reverse osmosis is expensive. In order to remove all contaminants, it requires four stages. First, the water is filtered through a media that traps microscopic particles; second, the media is passed through a second filtering medium; the third allows the final step of removing contaminants to take place; and finally, the filtered water is stored in a storage tank. This system is very inefficient.
A better alternative is to utilize a combination of media. A multi-media block can trap tiny contaminants, but also removes THMs. It is activated carbon that acts as a membrane between the media and the contaminants. The membrane is made of activated carbon with micron size that traps tiny particles, yet does not remove them. Then the water passes through this membrane, and is then filtered through the remaining contaminants in the water. This water filtration method is much more efficient than reverse osmosis, even though it costs slightly more.
A reverse osmosis system works by forcing liquid at high pressure through a very fine porous membrane. At the other end of the membrane, contaminants are trapped. This is the reverse of what happens at a Fresh Point, where there is a very fine film of minerals suspended. These minerals are naturally good for your health, and the trace minerals that come from a natural aquifer are very healthy for human consumption.
In order to clean up your water, you need to have some kind of purification device. That is why so many home bottled water systems use reverse osmosis filters. They filter out the contaminants, but not the trace minerals that you need. They do not catch chemical contaminants like chlorine and sediments. Bottled water companies do not pay for contaminant removal and they cannot guarantee that you receive an ideal PH level.
If you have a faucet that connects to a kitchen sink, you will have to install a separate system, if your faucet does not have a natural filtration system. Many people install both a reverse osmosis systems and a kitchen sink filtration system. They use a dual filtration system, with one running through a reverse osmosis water systems and the other through a kitchen sink filtration system. The point is to remove all the impurities, while leaving the trace minerals intact.
